If I had a Nickel....
Money isn't Everything!
Heard that before? Thought so.
As a mother of two girls I have a hard time steering my daughters away from "girl things" and towards the mundane subjects of business and finance. But not doing it means that I'm leaving them vulnerable and weak. Two qualities I'm distinctly uninterested in fostering. But the truth is, business is NOT mundane. I love my business. It's because I have my own business that I am increasingly available for my family and fully in charge of my own schedule. Women owned business generated over 3 trillion dollars last year and provided 23 Million jobs. No small numbers there. But what are we doing with all this money we're making? And how can we train our kids right now, so that they are armed and ready when the time comes?
Here's a few resources I use. Some for parents and some for kids and one for the whole family.
Gaucho.com - because making money is often about saving money. Gaucho gets it. Penny-pinching is so not passe'. Just take a look at group buying trends cropping up all over the place. Gaucho scours the net for coupons and deals. Hey, if you're already spending it - you may as well spend a little less or get a little more!
Dailyworth.com- A great email of daily money tips for women. The language of money can be all -too-male sometimes. Daily Worth translates for you and gives you sound tips and advice. A terrific resource for women who need to know more but sometimes shy away from traditional finance websites.
Prosperity4Kids.com - This one is non-negotiable. There is a Money Mama Piggy Bank in each of my daughter's rooms. A portion of their weekly allowance goes into the Investing Pig, a portion into the Long -Term Savings Pig, a portion into the Giving Pig and the rest into the spending Mama Pig! My kids love this - and even though we don't stick to the letter every single week - they "get" the idea. Namely, that money has to be managed. They already understand that the paychecks of their future will be delivered less taxes - an interesting concept when you begin discussing trading time for money! There are more resources on this site but the Bank is the prize in my mind.
RichWoman.com- Most of us have heard of Robert Kiyosaki the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad (a wonderful resource in it's own right. The husband wife team have taken it a step further with the RichWoman.com site which offers coaching and education specifically for women and run by Kim Kiyosaki. If you want to get the whole family involved see if you can score the team's inimitable game "CASH FLOW" from an auction or discount site (they can be pricey). You'll be shocked at how difficult it is to win this game which is focused on finding a way out of the "Rat Race".
Money isn't everything. But it sure is cool knowing how to make it and how to use it right!
